You think still owning a copy of Little Black Sambo is bad — I received a couple of years ago, in a box of gifts from my grandmother, who is distributing family heirlooms to all of us cousins before she dies — a china statue of a little black baby boy. He’s probably 8 inches tall, dressed in Victorian child’s clothing, and has white features (the mark says made in Germany) but has definitely been glazed as a very dark black child.
What on earth does one do with such a thing? He’s currently residing at the back of a shelf of curios … but really? Mysteries of the past …

The story you remembered is one I knew as “Clever Jack,” and it shares a trope with Epaminondas, which I also had. And one thing that gets forgotten about Sambo is that he’s really supposed to be Indian, what with all the tigers and turning themselves into ghee, both of which were unknown in Africa.

I remember loving the Babar books as a child. I haven’t looked at them since but in library school I was crushed to learn that they were ‘colonialist’ and ‘imperialist.’ I haven’t had the heart to go back and reread them.

Little Black Sambo, definitely. Hansel and Gretel’s pretty horrifying. And who the heck thought the lyrics of Rock a Bye Baby were soothing? “Hey kid, as soon as the wind blows, you’re going to fall out of the top of a tree. Sweet dreams!”
